Four weeks before the move

Give away your stuffs! Create of list of the items you would like to take with you to the new home and give away the rest to family/friends or charity.

Take the telephone, get some removals quotes and make the removals booking. Call you family/friends and ask them to recommend you. Sometimes a man and van removal firm might be able to do the house move for you at a cheap price. Sort out all required paperwork with the moving company.

Print out a list of the utility firms that need notifying and ring them up to let them know that you are changing address.

If you are renting, let your landlord know that you are moving as most accommodation contracts require at least one month notice. Even if you don’t need to give notice this early, it is a nice gesture to let your landlord know in advance.

Purchase all packing materials that you may require for the relocation such as removal boxes, wrapping papers, tapes, etc.

Two weeks before moving

Start with packing rarely used items (which are a lot!) so less time needs to be spent on packing later.

Create a list of your most used items and where they are going to in your new accommodation.

Call the removal company to confirm the moving time and date, locations, and let them know if there is any change in terms of the inventory list, service needed or any other information.

Inform your local authority about your move so they will stop sending council tax letters to your current address.

Ask your postal service provider to redirect your mails. This service normally costs some money, depending on how long you would like to use the mail redirection service.

One week before the move

Begin packing remaining items except for those you have to use until the move.

Create a list of family, friends and all parties that you need to notify about your move.

Arrange final electricity and meter readings and pay any outstanding bills relating to your current home.

Cancel or redirect all deliveries such as newspapers, magazines, milk.

Put important and valuable items such as passports, jewellery, driving license and certificates in a safe place.

Buy a new TV license or transfer existing TV license to your new home.

One day before your moving date

Complete all final packing and prepare a survival kit with essential items such as toilet paper, mugs, tea bags, spare light bulbs etc.

Confirm with your utility companies whether electricity, gas, telephone, Internet, TV are ready to be used in the new home.

Disconnect all unused appliances and defrost the fridge/freezer.

Make a nice clean around the house and leave a nice welcome card for the new owners so they will have a good start at place you used to love.

Have a sound sleep to make sure you are ready for the move day!

The moving day

Call your house removal company to ensure they are not running late.

Switch off electricity, gas and water supplies carefully and disconnect all appliances.

Lock all windows, doors and any other entrances to the house.

Once everything has been loaded on removal vehicles, have a quick look inside to make sure nothing is left behind.

Arrival at the new home

Move the boxes to the correct rooms/places they are meant to be.

Unpack all the items from the most relevant, especially the survival kit.

Check and ensure electricity, gas, water, TV, Internet, telephone and other utilities are running.

This applies whether you are looking to use international deliveries, European couriers or transport services in the UK.

Obviously, it is not always possible to be flexible when you need something taking from A to B.

For example, you may be sending an item on behalf of the firm you work for and have promised the customer in question that it will arrive at a certain time.

Equally, there may be a personal deadline such as a birthday or wedding anniversary that you are trying to meet.

However, in some cases, it is not necessary to be so precise.

Storage is great if you’re needing to move out of one house before your other hoese is ready – or when you’ve sold your old house but haven’t finished arranging the new one.  It saves the you having to work out what to do with your things.
It’s also a good idea when you have too much furniture for your new house, and no where to store it yourself – and while garages and basements are great for short term storage, they aren’t protected, in some cases against the elements, nor, possibly insured against accidents, such as fires or flood.  Garages and basements also, while accessible, may also need to be used for other things.

It is possible for your belongings to be damaged in storage, but highly unlikely – you’ll be given a list of belongings that you’re checking in – and you should check at that time that everything is secure, sealed and stacked or placed well.
If you’re moving long distance, its always good to research, throughly, by phone and if possible, in person, how much access you’ll have to your furniture, and belongings, and what sort of notice you need to give – you’ll also need to work out what is going into storage and how much space you’ll need for it all.
If you’re unsure of storage companies, and you’re using a removal company – ask them – they may have a group of storage companies they deal with, and offer you a better premium than you may otherwise get.  It also means that you’ve got less research to deal with.
